Introduction

Heading to the Sea

April first, 2014 was the departure date for the continuation of an amazing journey of discovery, and this time around, I have a new canine friend (see more on Buddy's blog) accompanying me on the road. The plan is to take the Lewis & Clark trail out of Lewiston, ID and hopefully finish the journey to St. Louis by the end of Summer. Depending upon where I find myself come August, the trip may come to a temporary halt or, maybe, it'll push forward to the Atlantic coast. I'm not entirely sure. So, why pursue such a seemingly capricious idea? Well, like many, I yearn to do something awesome, something that goes against the grain and highlights the goodness of life in an existence that so often feels mediocre. And if enjoying the fabulous people and places of this great nation can raise some money for a charitable foundation...Why not?

The route I've chosen ought to afford some amazingly pristine and wild scenery, and hopefully, I'll be able to make the most of the flora and fauna along the way. I've decided to catalogue plants and animals as I go, not because I have any desire to try my hand at biological taxonomy, but rather, I want to better appreciate the innate wonder of creation and establish a connection to the soil of this land. Part of the process requires documentation, while another practical side involves experimenting with foraging and the capturing of small prey. So, things should stay quite interesting.

Over the month of March, I prepared the supplies and logistical support needed to undertake the many miles. My goal is to complete the entire trip on a limited budget. All of my expenses are being covered personally. For that reason, I'll be taking every opportunity to minimize my out of pocket costs by tenting it much of the way and trying to survive on the dehydrated fruits and vegetables I've prepared or what edible items may be found along the way.

At the same time, since walking great distances is a good way to generate income for altruistic purposes, I'm running a fundraiser in tandem with this hike in support of Food for the Hungry. I've had some contact with them in the past, and I highly respect the integrity with which they operate and love the mission that the work upholds.

I would highly recommend that you check out the available video if you're not familiar with the core aims of FH. Also, in the event that you feel compelled to make a donation, a link has been provided. There are several key ways that you can help affect positive change in impoverished communities. So check out the options and see if one gels with your conscience.
